7 Easy Mood Boosts When You’re Feeling Down

Boost Mood | CARRIE ANN CONVERSATIONS

Have you ever just realized that your mood is feeling off but don’t know why? Our emotional state is made up of so many components and sometimes we can find ourselves feeling negative without knowing where it’s coming from or how to solve it. Our outlook can impact our whole day and if you’re not feeling your best it can affect everything from your physical wellbeing to your productivity to your personal relationships. In an ideal world, we’d always feel our best but the truth is that our energy levels and emotions are always in a state of flux. Sometimes, all it takes to give your mood a boost is a simple change, whether it’s introducing a new scent or your favorite color or getting your body moving.

Easy Ways To Boost Your Mood

Our feelings are complicated things, and it’s not always easy to change the deeper thought patterns or situations that impact our mindsets. Sometimes big stressors or complicated situations can weigh heavily on us, and there is no obvious “fix.” However, there are definitely small things that can impact our outlook for the better or the worse. You might not even realize how parts of your environment have been effecting you until you look for them; here are a few small ways you can give yourself a mood boost if you’re feeling stagnant or low.

1. Play Some Music

Music tends to speak to us in a different language and can provide a shift almost instantly. It’s hard not to feel a boost in your mood when your favorite music is playing or an upbeat song is pumping up your energy. Music can have such a strong effect on your environment and with the right songs you can turn your whole day around. If you don’t already have one, try creating a playlist of all your favorite feel-good music so you can reach for it anytime you want to change the vibe while you’re working, running errands, or just taking a break.

2. Get Moving

If you’re feeling downbeat or stagnant, a simple solution is just to stand up and move around. Especially as many of us work from home, it’s easy to get into a slump where you’re sitting in the same place for large chunks of the day and it can have a very negative impact on your mood. Simply getting up and jogging in place, doing some jumping jacks or doing a full-body shake can help wake your body up and change your energy. Even better, get outside for a quick walk; in addition to the endorphins you’ll produce from moving, your body will also benefit from the fresh air, sunshine, and change of scenery.

3. Make Sure You’re Fed, Hydrated and Comfortable

Sometimes our physical bodies have needs that we can forget to check in with. Have you ever realized that you’ve been hungry or thirsty or even just needed a trip to the restroom and you’ve been subconsciously putting it off? Our bodies can’t do their jobs unless we take care of them. If you ever feel a sudden downward shift in your mood, make sure all your physical needs are being met. A quick break from screens, a snack, or a drink of water can work like magic to boost your mood.

4. Reach Out To A Friend

Sometimes we can get into a negative mindset due to being isolated; without anyone to bounce our thoughts off of or lend perspective, even small obstacles can start to feel overwhelming. As humans, we need connection and community to function and feeling cut off from other people can have a big effect on our ability to live a happy and healthy life. Especially as many of us spend more time alone due to the pandemic, it’s vital to maintain ties with the people who know us best, even if they’re far away from us right now. If you’re feeling not quite yourself, make some time to call or Skype a loved one. It’s always important to remind yourself of the people in your life who love and care about you and it can always be helpful to have access to someone else’s perspective.

5. Light A Candle Or Spray Your Favorite Scent

Much like music, scents can have a powerful effect to boost our mood and our spaces. They have a strong connection to our memories and can remind us of times where we felt incredibly safe or at peace. Certain essential oils can also have all kinds of benefits from improved focus to calmed nerves to increased energy in addition to simple comfort. Lighting a candle or breaking out the essential oils can be a great way to break out of a funk and completely transform your space to be more comforting or stimulating.

6. Make A Quick Gratitude List

Gratitude is always a great solution if you’ve been feeling frustrated or sad. We have a tendency to discount the things that are good in our lives, especially when something bad is on our minds; making a list of things you’re thankful for is an easy way to bring those good things back to the center of your perspective. Remembering to be thankful for things like loved ones, achievements, or even access to a comfy bed or your favorite foods can help bring a negative outlook back into balance. Whenever you’re feeling down, try getting out some paper or a journal and jotting down five or ten things you’re thankful for today and keep it somewhere where you can look at it again whenever you need a reminder of the blessings you have.

7. Change Your Space

If you ever feel like you’re in a rut, look for little ways you can change your surroundings. If I start feeling stuck, I try to move around and reposition my furniture to invite new energy and get rid of stagnation. Sometimes a little change can be invigorating and help you feel more in control of your environment. Making little changes in the things you see every day, whether it’s changing out your art, adding a burst of color or clearing out cluttered shelves or closets, can make your space feel brand new and boost your spirits in a whole new way.

Watch Out for Negative Mood Shifts

Changing your mood from negative to positive can be easy at times, but be cautious because the inverse is also possible. Have you ever experienced a minor setback and had it ruin your entire mood? It can be really easy for us to lose perspective. Science says that we have a tendency towards negativity bias— negative experiences can be much more impactful on our moods and stay longer in our memories than positive ones. That’s why it’s so important to protect ourselves from negative emotional blowback. Here are a few emotional traps we can fall into and how to avoid them:

  • Getting Discouraged By A Setback. Sometimes if you aren’t able to accomplish something you wanted to or a plan goes wrong in an unexpected way, it can cast a shadow over your whole day. When this happens, try to think of the big picture— will you still be thinking about this setback in five years? Try listing five good things that happened this week. Seeking out context will help to keep this negative event from getting overblown in your mind.
  • Feeling Bored Or Stagnant. Boredom isn’t always a big event, but after a while it can start to have a really negative effect. We can start to feel directionless or forget our own passions or creativity. We can even start to believe that, because we’re bored, that life must be boring. This line of thinking can trick us into blinding ourselves to the interesting, stimulating and enjoyable parts of life. One way to keep boredom from seeping in is just to make a list of things you like to do: things like hobbies, projects, things on your to-read list or new nearby places you’d like to see. Keep this list in a prominent place so you can reference it whenever you feel bored or under-stimulated and see how it helps to boost your mood back up again.
  • Getting Caught In A Comparison Trap. A lot of the time, we have a tendency to look around at others to judge how we are doing. It’s in our nature to learn from others about how to move forward through life, but comparison can quickly become a poison that can ruin our ability to see the value in our own paths. If seeing a friend or colleague’s recent success or milestone on social media makes you feel bad about your own accomplishments, take a step back. Try to remember that you have no idea what that person’s life looks like and that we only post our best moments online. It’s not fair to compare your entire life to someone else’s highlight reel. Try to quickly make a list of five things you love about your life that you would have envied in someone else five years ago and see if your urge to compare starts to fade a bit.

Sometimes having a positive outlook can feel easier said than done. We can be so much more susceptible to changes in energy than we are prepared for; sometimes the smallest things can impact our perspective without us even being conscious of it. The good news is that these details can also work to help us; if we take care, we can do small things every day to protect and cultivate positivity, helping us to boost our mood and brighten our energy when we need it.

What Is Your Heart Trying To Tell You?

Sometimes, when life gets messy and confusing, it’s easy to lose track of your own feelings and desires. In those times it’s important to reconnect with ourselves and realign with our hearts. Some people call it connecting with your inner child, some people call it listening to your heart, some people say it’s letting your soul speak. Whatever you want to call it, a crucial part of living a full and happy life is stopping to make sure you’re open to hearing what your innermost self is trying to say.

Here are 8 ways to connect with your deeper self if you’ve had a hard time listening to your heart.

1. Take A New Approach To Journaling.

Journaling with your left or non dominant hand allows your mind to step out of your usual thought process and can help make connections with your deeper thoughts and needs.  When I need to hear from my innermost self, I ask myself a question and then let my non dominant hand reconnect me to my desires. Spend as much time as you need and pay attention to what comes up.

2. Let Your Feelings Out Visually.

A creative way to listen closer to your heart is to ask yourself a question and then sit down and draw. Try not to think consciously about what you’re creating; let it be scribbles, let it be messy, let it be authentically your own.  Take time to walk away and then come back and look at your drawing with fresh eyes.  You will know what you were trying to say. Even if you can’t extract an exact message from your subconscious creation, it can help you see what you were feeling that will point you in the right direction.

3. Access Movement.

Listen to a song you love, turn the lights down low and move.  Don’t make a particular effort to stretch or dance or anything else. Let your body move and sway however it wants, and don’t judge yourself— there are no mirrors in this exercise.  Give yourself permission to be free.  You may just sit there and move your neck to the music.  That’s okay, as long as you allow that music into your heart, connecting to the notes, the  melody, the lyrics. Take a deep breath and move.  You may run in place until you are exhausted.  You may just shake your body and release any tension, you may sway, you may begin a slow dance with an imaginary or real partner. You may just move one finger, or maybe just the corner of your mouth with turn upward, or a tear may dance down your cheek.  Whatever happens, allow it and accept it and love it as the artistic and authentic expression it is.

4. Try Some Meditation.

Ohm…. If listening to your heart is difficult, another thing to try is turning on a meditation track, a playlist with ohms, or just quiet meditative music.  Go into the stillness.  Try to visualize your heart in the middle of your chest.  See it beating, thank it for giving you life every day.  Thank it for pumping blood and life energy throughout your body.  Thank it for never stopping. Really try to see it, and connect to what keeps you alive every day.  Then, after you feel it and have expressed gratitude, just listen.  Breathe easily and listen.  There may be nothing it wants to say, but even by giving your heart this kind of attention, you will be listening and gaining an understanding even if your cognitive mind doesn’t grasp it.  You will feel more connected if you do this. Take your time.  It’s interesting to look into your own self this way, and it’s good to get to know yourself truly from the inside out.

5. Look To Your Memories

Look through a photo album, a stack of your old polaroids, or your phone’s camera roll until one of your photos calls to you. Spend some time with it, looking at every detail, gleaning every feeling from it, and then pick up a pen and some paper to write it all out. Think about what drew you to it— is it connected to a cherished memory? A favorite place or person? What about it elicits emotions? By spending time with a memory that called out to your heart and delving deeper into the feelings there you are honoring your deeper self.

6. Have A Meaningful Conversation With A Friend.

A good way to listen to your heart is to talk to a close friend about what is going on in your life, or a problem you’re having. Sometimes opening up to someone you trust can bring new clarity to a situation. They may bring up something that you hadn’t even thought about, or lead you down a path that broadens your perspective. They may help to clear the extraneous details or worries that are bogging you down and keeping you from truly listening to yourself. Often your friends know you better than you think they do, so turning to them might be exactly what you need to see something more fully.

7. Listen To Your Instincts.

If you have an immediate gut reaction to something, positive or negative, stop for a moment and listen. Ask yourself why you’re having these feelings and what led to them. Maybe write them down, or just take a few moments to hear what your intuition is trying to tell you. Our instincts are there for a reason and it’s important to acknowledge them. Recognizing your own thought process and what got you there can be a great tool in understanding yourself. Sometimes we need to step outside of ourselves for a moment, otherwise it can be so easy in the busy lives we lead to cruise on autopilot.

8. Go For A Walk.

There are many studies on how walking can improve brain function. So many leaders and thinkers have described the feeling of struggling with a problem for hours, only to discover the solution after taking a walk. If you feel stuck or need a change of perspective, going outside and getting yourself in motion can help your subconscious speak up and offer clarity. Let your heart lead the way on your walk and see where it takes you. Pay attention to where it lingers— does it pause at a particularly beautiful rosebush or guide you to a nearby park? Little clues that your inner self offers as it guides you can help you figure out what you need the most.

Although it seems simple and straightforward, listening to your heart can often be more elusive than you’d expect. Many experiences in life can leave us disconnected from our feelings, or encourage us to suppress or push them down. It’s important to stay in touch with our deeper selves. If you’ve been having a hard time paying attention to your emotions or inner voice, hopefully one of these techniques can help to bring your heart closer to the surface.

A Conversation With Rhonda Spies, Carrie Ann Inaba’s Stylist

For over 10 years, Rhonda Spies has worked with celebrities and notable figures as a stylist, preparing and equipping them with the perfect look for every occasion, event, and red carpet appearance. Rhonda has worked with Carrie Ann Inaba for the past 3 years and is responsible for making sure that every piece Carrie Ann wears reflects her personality and makes her truly shine. We had the chance to catch up with Rhonda and learn more about the work she does every day with Carrie Ann.

CAC: How did you get into styling as a career? What drew you to it and what are your favorite things about it?

Rhonda: I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember. I love the way it tells a story and reflects a person’s individuality and I love how it can instantly boost a person’s confidence simply by transforming how they feel when they’re comfortable in their own skin. I also love to see beautiful clothing come to life.

CAC: Can you give a quick definition for what a celebrity stylist does? Can you walk us through your average week working with Carrie Ann?

Rhonda: A celebrity stylist collaborates with their talent to dress them for various events. A lot of times you’re working with someone who’s building a career and the way that you’re dressing them is going to impact that career.

An average week with Carrie Ann on The Talk begins with selecting looks for the upcoming week. Often there will be various details about each show that we have to take into account: What color the background will be, whether Carrie Ann is sitting, standing or moving, who the guests are, etc. With those details in mind, together we work to set the looks. On show days I’m there to bring the looks to life by helping her get dressed, foreseeing any problems that may arise and adjusting accordingly, accessorizing and making sure she is comfortable before the show goes live.

CAC: How long have you been working with Carrie Ann? Has your process for styling her or her style itself evolved over your time together, and if so how?

Rhonda: I have been working with Carrie Ann since 2017. My process is constantly evolving as Carrie Ann’s career evolves and changes. I pay attention to current trends and classic styles. I bring her pieces that will complement her while keeping her looking fresh and new at the same time.

CAC: What parts of Carrie Ann’s personality, style, identity or look do you take into account when styling her?

Rhonda: When you’re dressing someone, you have to take all of the components of their personality into consideration while at the same time executing your vision and taking into account the feel of each specific event or appearance you’re dressing them for. As each year passes I get to know Carrie Ann better and better and as a stylist I like to gently nudge her out of her comfort zone. I think if you look back over the years we’ve worked together you can see how her style has changed and grown. I always tease her that I have to nourish her inner fly girl so I try to add a certain flair that speaks to her aesthetic. At the same time staying aware of the little nuances of Carrie Ann’s taste helps push me out of my comfort level as well. She is very intuitive so I feel like we have a mutual level of trust that allows us to take fun fashion risks.

CAC: When you need to style Carrie Ann for a theme episode of Dancing With The Stars or The Talk, what’s your process for deciding on a concept and then making it a reality?

Rhonda: With The Talk, I start with the creative notes and direction from the executive producers. From there I research looks, swatch fabrics and collaborate with my wardrobe department for a cohesive direction. Then a costume will come to life. Most recently for Halloween 2020 we created magic for Carrie Ann as Willy Wonka.

CAC: What’s been your favorite theme episode look to design for Carrie Ann?

Rhonda: For Dancing With The Stars , I love the theme weeks when we get to experiment and build a costume from the ground up. This past season my favorite week was “Villains Week” when Carrie Ann was a glamorous version of Pennywise from IT.

CAC: Could you walk us through picking the inspiration, deciding on and finding the specific pieces, and putting it all together?

Rhonda: I started by researching past images of Pennywise from the movie and what existing costumes available on the market looked like. From there I took a few of my favorite images to the brilliant costume maker Maggie Barry and together we sketched our vision. Then we sourced fabric and started to put together the look. I ordered the accoutrements such as the neck ruffle, the red pom poms and striped tights. The next step was the first fitting which is where I can really see what is working and what tweaks need to be made. Then it’s back to the costume maker for the final touches. The process is a lot of work, but so much fun and was so rewarding to see her in our creation on show day.

Courtesy of ABC

CAC: Is there anything you particularly love about working with Carrie Ann or about working on Dancing With The Stars?

Rhonda: I love Carrie Ann’s willingness to experiment and try new things. She is the most fun to dress up and truly loves to collaborate. We have become very close and I’m so grateful that she’s always up for trying new things and experimenting with new looks. It’s always rewarding to watch her own look after look. Dancing With The Stars is the absolute best because she gets to wear a beautiful gown every week and I enjoy the process of finding new designers to bring to her and redefining her style every season. It’s truly hard for me to pick a favorite. One look from this past season that was memorable was her gown from Disney week. It was very feminine and ethereal. Paired with dreamy make up and a blush colored wig the look really came together.

Carrie Ann’s team is made up of Rhonda Spies (Stylist), Marylin Lee Spiegel ( Makeup) and Glenn Nutley ( Hair) for Dancing with the Stars and and Rhonda Spies (Stylist), Marylin Lee Spiegel ( Makeup) and Steve Berg (Hair) for The Talk.  Watch for more articles from her incredibly talented team.

How I Made My First Vision Board

Back when Carrie Ann and I were working on her first piece on advice for creating a vision board, I was impressed by her love for the process and her investment in the meaning of creating a board like this. She said it wasn’t an attempt to magically manifest things out of thin air, but rather an exercise to make yourself focus on what you want out of life, and create a reminder for yourself. We thought it would be an interesting experiment if I took what I learned from her and used it to make my own vision board.

I’ve never done a vision board before. A lot of the time I feel like I’m allergic to spending time deeply reflecting on myself, and I’m terrible at knowing what I want. I’m still trying to work myself out of a long-ingrained mindset that time spent only on myself is time wasted; I’ve also had a career path that has rarely, if ever, gone the way I planned. Because I’ve never been great at visual design, I have to admit I was also honestly afraid it was going to turn out ugly. I knew this was going to be an interesting exercise, and despite these potential challenges I was excited to see what the process would teach me.

In general I’ve never been much of a visual processor and I’m much more likely to write things down in bulleted lists when I’m trying to figure them out. The closest thing to a vision board I’ve ever made is some collages, so I tried to approach the board the same way. When I collage, I flip through a lot of magazines and cut out any images or words I find interesting or even funny and keep them in a box. Anytime I create a new collage I go to the box and that’s where connections between the random words and images start to arise.

One of my collages.

With this project, though, I knew my approach had to be different because intentionality is the whole point of a vision board. I would have to decide what kind of themes were going to be a part of it before I started hunting for images. I sat down and thought about what I wanted from this year. In past years I think this would have looked a lot more external; thinking about the kind of relationships I wanted, a new apartment, a career I enjoy, but this year my biggest desires were all internal. I wanted to be stronger, happier, more at ease with myself, more confident in my passions and choices. “Strength” was a word that I kept repeating as I looked for images, as well as “happiness” and “confidence.” As I began my search, I kept a lot of Carrie Ann’s advice in mind: look for more vibes than specifics when perusing images, remember to make space for the things in life you’re already grateful for, and above all do whatever feels right to you.

My clippings box.

As I started flipping through magazines, images of strong women kept catching my eye. “Ideally, I would be like this,” I thought. A photograph of Georgia O’Keefe photographing wilderness struck me. “I want to pursue my creative ventures like this.” Jane Fonda brandishing a pistol in her role as a cowgirl in an old movie. Lauren Bacall refusing to shave her armpits back in the 50s. Emma Stone portraying Billie Jean King who fought every day to be no less than exactly who she was. Each one has something I find aspirational and it became clear they were going to be a big part of my vision board. I even found a big photo of a local politician whose campaign had inspired me and reminded me the difference that individuals can make even in the face of huge systemic issues.

While I had planned a good bit before diving in, there were things I hadn’t planned to look for that also started making it into the clippings box. Almost every photo of a scenic hotel view or a sunny beach or a European skyline also called to me. I don’t think I realized how much I missed travel this past year and it’s something I hope for more than anything in the coming year. I printed out a photo I took at the Joshua Tree Airbnb I worked out of for a few weeks last summer as a reminder that just because I can’t book a trip to Rome yet doesn’t mean I can’t keep finding little adventures wherever I am.

In general I’m more of a detail-oriented person than a big picture thinker which means, especially this past year, I’ve often found myself preoccupied with a constant to-do list and bogged down with a never ending bevy of worries. As I started putting together my vision board, I realized how nice it was to take a break from the worries of the present and put all my focus and energy into visualizing an ideal future.

Vision Board | Carrie Ann Conversations
Putting it together.

I found myself collecting little blocks of words or quotes that I thought were powerful and eventually realized that they would make an entire section. Finally, I saved one corner of my vision board just for things that make me happy. A photo of a hairless cat I follow on Instagram, a sketch of Dodger Stadium, a picture I took at my favorite plant shop, Tony Shalhoub at the Golden Globes. I thought it was important to remember how many little things a day bring a smile to my face. Just because they’re little doesn’t make them less important to me.

Vision Board | Carrie Ann Conversations
Final product.

I really liked my finished vision board. When I look at it it gives me the impression of strength, confidence, spontaneity, humor— all things I find in myself at my best times. I think coming out of a different year where we hadn’t all lost so much I might have been looking for different things than simple open skies and a sense of resilience, but here and now I think it represents exactly what I need from (and hope for) myself and the world in the coming year.

If you’ve never done a vision board because you, like me, don’t consider yourself a big picture visionary or a visual processor or you’re unsure about the benefits it could bring, I’d encourage you to try it out. As someone who usually works with words it was freeing to not feel like I had to come up with a verbal explanation for every image I chose; I could focus more on creating a little world out of visuals and vibes and see new connections and themes emerging that would never have occurred to me outright. It was great to get access to a new outlet and spend some time thinking deeply about my own wants and needs for the coming year as well as the parts of myself that I want to encourage and grow. If you’re ever feeling stuck, stagnant, or unsure where to put your energy, creating a vision board might be a great low-stress way to start answering some of those questions for yourself.

The New Age Guide to Self Love

Valentine’s Day is historically a time to spend focusing on relationships and the love you share with another person. But this year, why not spend some time cultivating and drawing on the love you have for yourself? Self love can take many forms depending on what’s important to you, whether it’s cooking your favorite meal or giving yourself a quiet moment to read your favorite book. If you’re looking for a special way to celebrate yourself this weekend, there are so many ways to craft a new ritual for self love. From crystals to tea to flowers to meditations, here’s a guide to giving yourself a Valentine’s weekend devoted to self love.

Crystals for Self Love

Self Love
Love Crystal Grid from House of Intuition

You can use healing crystals for meditation by holding them, placing them nearby or setting them on chakras that need unblocking or a bit of extra love. You can also benefit from their energy just by keeping them in your home in the areas you spend the most time.

Rose quartz is one of the most popular crystals to promote self-love. It has a strong connection to the heart chakra and having some around will remind you to be softer with yourself, making it the perfect crystal to pick up before Valentine’s day. Its nurturing vibrations are sure to nourish and soften your spirit, restoring any weariness.

Rose Quartz Flowers from Loving Thyself Rocks

Rhodochrosite is a stone for compassion and can be used to generate healing love both inward and outward. Using it in your practice can help you relate more towards yourself, forgive yourself for your mistakes, and help move on from scars of the past.

Amethyst is a stone that tends to connect us to a higher, more spiritual plane. Tapping into this energy can help you feel more calm and peaceful, generating more self esteem and self love. It can be especially useful for furthering meditation practices because it encourages you to wade out of the everyday lower-level concerns and look higher.

Rhodochrosite Tower from Marka Jewelry

Use this Valentine’s Day as a chance to fall in love with yourself. Red Jasper is connected to your root chakra, giving you a strong sense of grounding and connecting you to your truest, deepest self.

Amazonite is a crystal that increases confidence and self esteem and surrounding yourself with a piece of it can wrap you in a blanket of assurance and comfort. It’s also a great stone for dispelling anxiety.

Essential Oils for Self Love

Self love
Rose Quartz Infused Love Body Oil from Herb + Stone Apothecary

Whether diffused, put in a bath, or rubbed on the wrists and temples, there are a lot of ways to incorporate essential oils into your daily self-care routine. Roses have always had a symbolic connection to love and romance, and for good reason. Both the scent and the taste of roses hold incredible warmth and power for us, helping lift our spirits and our confidence while cleansing us of negativity.

Bergamot encourages hope and self-acceptance and can help you tap into your deeper inner courage. It helps clear away emotional pain leaving you clear and full of self assurance.

Every self love routine should include a little love for your physical body. In essential oil form, grapefruit can help awaken you to physical sensations and make you more aware of your body, telling it that you’re checked into it and care about it.

Sweet Orange is one of the most uplifting scents and can provide a boost of energy and esteem especially if you’ve been feeling stagnant or low.

Teas for Self Love

Self Love Potion
Love Potion Recipe from Good Witch Kitchen

Tea can be a special ritual to promote growth and healing wherever you need it. While many shops can provide specialty blends, simple boxes available in grocery stores can be just as magical if you know where to look. Hibiscus or rose tea with a bit of honey makes for the perfect blend of love in a cup. Chamomile is a comforting dose of self love. Passionfruit tea can help ignite and engage your deeper passion and zest for life. Jasmine tea is often known for its ability to draw and grow spiritual love and connect you to higher vibrations.

If you’re more inclined to shop for tea blends (or make your own), artist and occultist Katelan Foisy has several tea recommendations for different emotional needs and intentions (you can see her full article here). For self love, she recommends: “Hibiscus, roses, rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg, and some mint. Put a little honey in it and honestly it does taste like love.” This recipe from Good Witch Kitchen is similar, using many warm, delectable ingredients to form a “love potion” that will give you a moment to restore and reflect.

Decorating Your Spaces

Self Love Magic Candle from House of Intuition

We often decorate and embellish our spaces for special occasions and romantic dates, so why not keep that energy for celebrating ourselves as well?

Flowers are one of the most romantic gestures we have in our culture; picking up a bouquet or two of certain flowers can be a beautiful way to promote self love. Roses are the most common symbol for love and getting a gorgeous bouquet or a garland to hang around your space this weekend might make your whole area feel fresh and full of love. If you’ve never been one for pink or red, you can also decorate your space with bright and beautiful sunflowers that boost your space and emanate pure love. Delicate blue forget-me-nots are a symbol of eternal love and devotion and will also amplify the loving vibes you’re summoning.

Candles are also an easy way to fill a space with a soft and loving aura. Using candles with scents like bergamot, roses, lilac or whatever scent makes you feel the most at home. You can also buy a self love candle from a specialty shop like House of Intuition or Art of the Root filled with essential oil blends and crystals and promote the ritual even further.

Baths

Love Bath Bomb from House of Intuition

Taking a long bath is an act of self-care no matter what, setting time for yourself away from the rest of the world to soak in the love. There are a few scents and ingredients you can add to boost the positive affirmations and make it into a special occasion, whether it’s a simple bath bomb, a few drops of your chosen essential oil, or even following a luxurious bath recipe.

For maximum love, Katelan recommends making a milk bath and filling it with rose petals, honey, lavender and orange peel. You can create a milk bath using regular milk, goat’s milk or coconut milk or even just mixing instant dry milk powder into your bath after it’s drawn.

A Meditation for Self Love

If you’re busy or just running low on time or energy, there are also very simple ways to instill your Valentine’s Day with self love. If nothing else, you can spend 12 minutes recommitting to a loving, compassionate, and empathetic relationship with yourself over the course of this short self love meditation.

The most important element of self love is simply making time to care for yourself as much as you would for any loved one. Whether this means a moment for quiet, some aromatherapy or a warm bath, I hope you find time this weekend to prioritize your most important relationship: the one you have with yourself.

Carrie Ann Inaba’s Tips For Living With Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune Survival Kit | CARRIE ANN CONVERSATIONS

Going through life with an autoimmune condition, or several, like I do, can be a difficult process. Over the years I’ve been diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and I have the markers for antiphospholipid syndrome, which can lead to blood clots. When many of us start our health journeys, even if we are fortunate enough to get a diagnosis, we can quickly end up with more questions than answers. Often when it comes to autoimmune conditions there is no perfect solution or clear path forward. Coping with autoimmune conditions can sometimes feel quite lonely. When I first got diagnosed, some encouraged me to keep my struggles to myself, but I’ve found that it’s always been better to be honest about my needs and realities than to stay silent. I believe strongly in sharing my journey, my solutions, and the things that have helped me with anyone who could use it— this is how communities are formed.

If you’ve been struggling with the symptoms of an autoimmune condition, and experience anything from dryness to soreness to an upset stomach, hopefully something on this list can make your life with autoimmune a bit more manageable. Keep in mind that not everything in this list might make a good fit for you, and you might have discovered solutions I haven’t even heard of yet and would love to hear. When it comes down to it, you get to make your own rules for your life with your autoimmune conditions. I hope you get something out of my routine and that you’ll share your own tricks and tools for staying healthy!

With Sjogren’s Syndrome, dryness of the eyes is a never-ending problem. It’s important to keep my eyes properly lubricated all day and all night to avoid painful dryness, redness, and irritation. I use these lubricant eye drops throughout the day so that I never have to deal with the pain that dry eyes can cause; I’m also allergic to preservatives so these drops are safe for me to use.

These eye drops are a bit thicker, which prevents me from using them during the day when I’m wearing contacts. However, they’re perfect for use just before bed, giving me relief from irritation so I don’t wake up with any painful dryness in my eyes.

One of my favorite night time rituals is after I have put in my last round of eye drops is to use this Japanese eye mask. The lavender scent is my favorite but there are chamomile and citrus and non scented ones as well. They are disposable and I usually wake with them rolled up in a ball, but my eyes always feel much better. Putting heat on my eyes increases circulation and just keeps them feeling fresher and healthier.

For Dry Skin

Dryness can be such an issue with my autoimmune conditions, and truth be told, I just feel old when my skin shows dryness, so it’s always been important to me to make sure my skin stays properly moisturized. I have a few products to help keep my skin hydrated throughout the day; one of my favorites is FIJI Body butter.

For added smoothness and moisturization, I apply this oil after using lotion on my skin. A tip I learned from working with dancers is to put the oil on the outside as the final step to keep the moisture in. Sealing your lotion with an oil is incredible, and nothing feels better than feeling fully hydrated.

OPI ProSpa Collection, Manicure Nail & Cuticle Oil

Because I use my hands a lot, keeping my cuticles healthy is important to me. After lotioning up I use a cuticle oil; Opi’s is my favorite. Even though I may not be getting to the nail salon like I used to, I am still able to keep up my cuticles at the very least. It helps me have the confidence to use my hands without having to look at the dryness all the time and be reminded of my condition.

If you ever come to a taping of one of my shows, you’ll see that I’m always using sprays. This is because, as a Sjogren’s Sister, I’m always battling dryness and do whatever I can to keep myself feeling comfortable. I love these sprays because scents are very important to me and I love coconut and rose. I spray one of these on my face when is start to feel dry.  I also like to spray it into the air and walk through it, which always makes me feel like I just walked through a little breeze.

I can always trust this mist to freshen up my space, and its simple bottle fits into any environment without clashing. It can also be used over make up or during your facial cleansing routine. I always carry it in my purse for the times that I need a bit of refreshment.

Whenever I travel to a new space and the air feels dry to me, I use a mixture of lavender essential oils and distilled water in a spray bottle to help hydrate and refresh the air. It’s a great way to take control of the energy in a space, making sure it’s fresh and welcoming.

For Dry Hair

I’ve been dealing with dry hair due to my autoimmune conditions for years, and since having COVID it’s become even more delicate. I have an entire article detailing my favorite products to help lock in moisture and keep hair feeling fresh, soft and healthy that you can read here.

For Dry Mouths

Sjogren’s can also leave my mouth feeling uncomfortably dry; because so much of my career involves talking to people, it’s always important to me to have a mouth spray like this one on hand to get rid of any dryness.

Spry Xylitol Mints

These mints are great to keep on hand; they are sugar-free, taste great, and help with saliva production. I like the fruity flavor of the berry mints, but they have many different flavors. You can find your own favorite to have on hand to keep your breath fresh and your confidence up.

For Muscle Soreness, Aches and Pains

Muscle pain, joint pain and aches are a body’s worst nightmare. Even small aches and pains for a person with autoimmune conditions can signal much worse developments on the horizon; soreness in one spot can lead to immobility elsewhere, and flare ups are always a concern. Because of this, much of what I do in life is to avoid pain, minimize it, or nip it in the bud so that I can continue to live my best life. These are some of the products that I use regularly to help me avoid and manage pain.

Muscle Hammer

I get flare ups all the time, and physical activity always increases the odds of a bad flare up. When I work out, my muscles tighten up so much that the pain can prevent me from getting into a consistent schedule. Using a massage gun right after I work out helps reduce the risk of muscle pain and flare ups. Full disclosure: Muscle Hammer is owned by my brother, so of course it’s my favorite!

The Muscle Hammer helps to prevent lactic acid buildup (which is what causes post-workout soreness) so that I can work out again the next day. This has become especially important during the pandemic, as I used to rely on personal massages to keep autoimmune related inflammation at bay. This massage gun helps to fill that need while we all stay safe at home. It saves money in the long run and helps you feel good about taking care of yourself. The Muscle Hammer is also much quieter than many similar products on the market, meaning you can use it around other people whenever you need without worrying about disrupting anyone.

Solimo Lavender Epsom Salt

Another natural remedy that I use quite often is epsom salts. I take epsom salt baths anytime I feel a flare coming, or have any muscle tightness. Sometimes I use it just to calm my senses. The ones I use have lavender essential oils in it, because I love lavender. Eucalyptus is a great addition if you’re dealing with clogged pores or sinuses— I used to use it until I found out it’s toxic to cats and now I keep eucalyptus out of my home entirely.

Epsom salt baths are a great way to combine physical healing with emotional and spiritual self care, and all are important for living a full, balanced life with autoimmune conditions. Light a candle, turn on some music and calm your spirit.  If you need a wake-me-up, you can throw some lemon or orange or lemongrass essential oil in the bath as well to help your senses come alive.

Traumeel Ointment

Buy Now On Amazon

After taking a warm bath, I often will rub Traumeel on my legs, neck and shoulders. I have found it helps with pain and inflammation. I keep it in my nightstand because often nighttime, before falling asleep, is when pain tends to be hardest to ignore. I like Traumeel specifically because, unlike Icy Hot or Tiger’s Balm, it’s almost scentless, making it a nice subtle choice for my evening routine. I use Traumeel almost every night for muscle discomfort; so much of my routine is built around pain management and preventing flare ups, and using Traumeel daily is a big part of this routine.

For Energy

Bach Original Flower Remedy Olive Flower Essence

As my fellow autoimmune warriors know, fatigue is always at the top of the list of concerns. When I feel fatigue coming on, I’ve found that energy drinks leave me worse for the wear. One remedy that I use when I am feeling depleted and just need a boost to get through my day is Bach Flower’s Olive Remedy. Bach Flower Remedies are homeopathic tinctures developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s, and each one has a different application. I’ve been using these products for years to treat everything from stress to sleeplessness. It does contain alcohol, so if you can’t use alcohol because of medications or any other reason, just check with your doctor. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctors before mixing anything with your medications.

For Sinus Congestion

Neti Pot Kit

Ever since I was a child, I have had to deal with a stuffy nose. I’ve struggled with allergies all my life. Sinus health is an issue for me, because infections can be painful and draining. I use a neti pot every morning in the shower to clear my sinuses and keep them moist.  This one is great because it comes with the saline packets; you just have to mix warm water with the packet, tilt your head and pour…one nostril at a time. Gravity does all the work, and the process will leave you feeling clear and refreshed.

Afrin Original Maximum Strength 12 Hour Nasal Congestion Relief Pump Mist

I’ve been using Afrin to treat stuffy noses since I was a child. This pump isn’t meant for long term use, but when you need to open your nasal passages quickly, this works the best. I always carry one in every set bag and in every purse I own; this small pump is small and easy to transport and use.

For Sensitive Stomachs

Prince of Peace Instant Ginger Honey Crystals

I have a sensitive stomach. Recently I was diagnosed with IBS, and I’ve been going through an antibiotic treatment that’s improved my system a lot so far. However, my stomach is still sensitive, so when I’m not feeling great, or just when I want a hot drink in my mug, I use these packets. I stock them in every dressing room and always have them at home. This drink tastes great. It does have a lot of sugar so it might not be right for those of you who are on a no-sugar diet, but I’ve found that these are a great remedy for upset stomachs.

For Avoiding Flares

For me, autoimmune flares often come when I’m overwhelmed or trying to take on too much. In many ways, I think that flares are signs from the universe to slow down and treat yourself with more care. This is one of several reasons that I keep a big dry erase wall calendar up at all times. Not only does it help me keep track of my work schedule and reiki and acupuncture appointments, but it also helps me schedule in days for rest. These are days that I’m not allowed to work or even make plans with anyone else. Planning ahead to give yourself time to recharge without feeling bad is vital to a healthy life balance for me. Because I’ve suffered from insomnia for the past few years, naps have become a big part of ensuring that I get the amount of good sleep that I need to thrive. Even if you’re not big on taking naps during the day, even just taking ten minutes to grab some headphones, put on a meditation from Insight Timer or Calm, and shut out the world can have such a positive impact on how you feel for the rest of the day.

For Brain Fog

I often find myself grappling with the “fibro fog” that comes along with my fibromyalgia diagnosis; this fog can make anything from reading the teleprompter at The Talk to remembering appointments very challenging. I try to keep notepads all over my house to jot down things as they come to me. I also keep a Moleskine journal in my purse and am constantly making to-do lists. Sometimes I don’t even need to come back to these lists but the process of writing them down helps it stay in my memory easier. Another thing I’ve found is helpful when dealing with these fogs is simply to be honest about them with those around me, and forgive myself for having them. When I’m able to have empathy and compassion for myself instead of shame or disappointment, it helps to create a more supportive and understanding environment around me as well.

A gentle reminder: when it comes to autoimmune conditions, there is no one perfect solution. Everyone’s path to healing is deeply personal, and usually it’s a mix of several remedies and practices mixed together. Each person is different, and you always need to listen to your own body when it tells you what it needs. Over the years, these are all products and practices that I’ve found bring me relief and allow me to live a more balanced and full life, and I wanted to share these with you. If you have your own solutions, please leave them in the comments below— the tip you share might change someone else’s life for the better, and we could all use that.

The 10 Best Things Our Therapists Have Told Us

Therapist Advice | Carrie Ann Conversations

Each of us at Carrie Ann Conversations is on our own path to wellness, and for each of us this has involved or continues to involve going to therapy to help us live our best lives. We know that there are many who are wary of therapy, or who don’t have the means to see a therapist right now, so we wanted to share some of the best lessons we’ve taken away from therapy with you.

1. Avoid “Gaslighting” Yourself.

Welp! I was blown away by this when my therapist told me this. I was so tough on myself in the way I spoke to myself that he considered it gaslighting. Since then I have been very careful about the way I talk to myself. Most of the time I am positive, but deep inside of me there is a very dark, very hurt part that feels like she is not enough. I have struggled with this most of my life. I have always felt different, and unlike other people. I have always known that the way my mind works is a bit different than others. I have come to a peace with this and have learned to accept my ‘different-ness.’ But every once in a while I will have an experience that makes me frustrated with the way my mind works, I get stuck, or caught, or confused and I feel shame about myself and it makes its way into my self-talk. I didn’t realize how incredibly negative my self-talk could be until I shared it with my therapist. He was surprised to find that I had such negative self-talk, but once we shed some light on it and gained an understanding of the thought processes behind it, it became easier to stop the negative pattern in its tracks. It can be so easy to slip into negative self-talk and harm ourselves in this way, and sometimes it can take an outside perspective to show you how warped that self-talk can become. Be careful of the language you direct towards yourself and ask if you would say that to a close friend— you deserve the same love and respect as anyone else! —Carrie Ann

2. “Fight or Flight” Can Actually Help You.

My therapist once told me that anxiety is your brain reacting to normal incidents (a disagreement with a coworker or roommate, an unexpected setback) as if they are physically threatening your safety. Your body releases a lot of adrenaline to help you fight or fly from what it perceives as a very real danger; sometimes physically moving can help you burn off these chemicals and help your heart stop racing. Whether it’s taking a walk or just pacing your room, a little movement can help your brain get back on track. —Becca

3. Check Your Anxiety Against Reality.

If you’re really anxious about something, journaling or listing your worries out doesn’t mean you’re giving them life. Sometimes I have the tendency to go to the worst possible outcome in my head, and my brain can get pretty creative with how something is going to go sideways. By writing your worries down, you have the ability to check back at the end of the week and see if any of them actually came true. Most of the time they haven’t, and this can help retrain your brain to stop the worries in their tracks.— Ellyn

4. Shift Your Perspective Back Onto You.

Often the tendency is for me to go in and talk about things that happened to me, or something that triggered me throughout the week. And an old pattern is to want to say, “Why did they do that?” That is not something anyone but that person can explain, so my therapist isn’t going to be able to answer that kind of question. Instead, he can help me shift my thinking back to what I can do something about, which is my thinking and my reaction, and the “why’s” become more about me and less about them. This shift in perspective always brings me peace because the world feels less overwhelming when I am only worried about my reaction to it rather than worrying how to help, fix, or change everyone else. I was always taught to help others which put me in the background. This tip from my therapist to focus on me may sound egocentric, but it’s actually healthy to look at your actions or emotions when trying to understand why a situation was so painful, difficult or triggering in general. —Carrie Ann

5. Don’t Fight Panic.

I used to occasionally have panic attacks, and once I knew what they were, they became much easier to move through. My therapist told me not to fight them, but to recognize them and know that they would end. If I felt one coming on, I would say to myself “Okay, this is just a panic attack. It will be over soon and I will be okay”. Simply recognizing the fact that it was panic allowed me to focus on deep breathing and not let thoughts like “Oh my god what’s happening!! This is horrible!!” keep swirling through my brain. — Ellyn

6. Have Empathy For Your Anxiety.

Having dealt with anxiety for most of my life, I often deal with anger and frustration over my own anxious thoughts. I often feel like they make me weaker and I’d be a better, stronger person without them. My therapist once told me that having resentment for this side of me and trying to ignore or suppress it isn’t always the best option because these thoughts, to some extent, will always be a part of me. She explained that I developed these thoughts for a reason; my more cautious side is just trying to look out for and protect me, even if it’s not always doing the best job. She told me to thank this side of myself when it brings me things to be concerned about and respectfully tell it, “thank you for bringing this to my attention but I don’t think this is something I need to put my energy towards.” This puts me back in the driver’s seat while treating my anxious side with compassion and respect instead of self-loathing. — Becca

7. Speak Up For Your Inner Child.

Often when we are upset about something, or frustrated, it is because we haven’t spoken up in a way that takes care of the little child inside of us.  As we become adults, we are now in charge of our own welfare.  And it’s important that we speak up for what we need, and to express how we are feeling. It’s important for us to ask, “What is the little child inside trying to say?”  If we communicate out of that desire to take care of ourselves in a loving and compassionate way, we do not need to act out like a child.  If we speak up for them, that child doesn’t have to act out or throw a tantrum, or feel like withdrawing into safety is their only option for coping with the amount of anxiety and discomfort they feel.  When the inner child feels safe, we as adults will feel more connected and cohesive in this world.  And we will be better able to show up in the world in a more honest way.  We all have experienced trauma as children. That’s the process of growing — facing difficult things  and moving through them.  When we speak up for our inner child in a mature and “adult” fashion, we heal.  And we welcome and show that child we love and accept them as they are.  We show them that they are worthy of being protected and that is very healing. — Carrie Ann

8. Add A Little Humor To Your Self-Talk.

If you catch yourself in catastrophe mode, or thinking of all of the ways something could go awry, you can diffuse the situation in your own brain by adding a little humor. Saying something like “Wow you really got creative with that one didn’t you! Haven’t heard that one before. Ok anxiety, I see you,” can really take the life out of a thought. It takes practice to recognize the anxiety in the first place, but once you do, it’s easier to remove yourself from the situation that is your overactive imagination. —Ellyn

9. Watch Out For Black-And-White Thinking.

If your first reaction to a new circumstance, unexpected behavior or new person is to think “is this good or bad for me?” then you might have a tendency toward black and white thinking. It’s a trauma response designed to help us cope and survive, usually forged in times when quickly figuring out whether you are safe or in danger is very important. However, in many situations this need to distinguish can keep us from coming to the best conclusion. I used to spend whole days trying to figure out if a good friend doing something that hurt my feelings meant I could no longer trust them ever again instead of simply realizing that that friend is a human who is neither perfect nor evil and untrustworthy. It can feel safer and easier to put people and situations in big boxes labelled GOOD or BAD but the truth is that most things don’t and you could miss out on a lot by trying to see the world this way.—Becca

10. Sometimes We Need To Connect To Nature To Connect To Ourselves.

We can often forget how much of a difference it can make to stay grounded. Human beings have been living in harmony with this planet for millennia, walking on the ground and staying in tune with it. While convenient, our modern lives often interrupt our ability to connect to nature in the same way that our ancestors did. Going outside and putting your feet on the earth is so important.  So is seeing nature, inhaling the aromas of the natural world we came from.  When you sit in nature, you remember your place in this world and it can be very soothing.  Whether it’s taking a hike, sitting at the beach, lying in your backyard looking at the stars or just standing in the morning grass with your bare feet… it reminds you of the beauty of the world in which we live and are a part of. — Carrie Ann

The benefits of seeing a therapist can be hard to quantify. The process of therapy can be long and we are all constantly growing and learning new things about ourselves. Many of the ways that therapy is helpful can feel very intangible or abstract; these breakthroughs are crucial and valuable, but there are also lightning-like moments where something finally clicks into place all at once. These are a few of the biggest “aha” moments we had in our journeys; we hope they are helpful for you in your own journey.
