In collaboration with healthcare professionals, individuals with autoimmune diseases may require medication to manage symptoms and slow disease progression. Adhering to prescribed treatment plans and attending regular medical appointments are essential for optimal health outcomes. It is also important for you to communicate clearly with your health care professionals about what you are taking, including supplements to make sure the medications are being optimized specifically for you.

This Mental Exercise Can Ground You & Help Ease Anxiety

Have you heard of the “5 Senses Exercise”? It’s a simple yet incredibly effective technique that many therapists recommend for anxious moments. Engaging all of our senses at a single moment has a way of diverting our attention from whatever may be distressing us. It’s grounding and can help to bring you back to homeostasis (or at least a normal level of nervces!). Whether it’s a job interview, date, or important meeting that has you stressing, this exercise is here to give you strength and confidence in under 1 minute or less.

Step 1: Visualize a place

This can be anywhere. Maybe it’s somewhere where you feel most at ease. Maybe it’s comforting and familiar. Maybe it’s a place you’ve never been to but have always dreamed of visiting. It’s your mind! You can travel wherever you’d like.

Step 2: Name 5 things you see

Settle in to this place and look around. What do you see? Birds? Trees? A waterfall? Make note of 5 things.

Step 3: Name 4 things you hear

Chances are this place isn’t silent. What are you hearing? The chatter of people? Ocean waves crashing? Recognize 4 sounds in your head.

Step 4: Name 3 things you feel

What can you touch? Are you sitting on a blanket? Can you feel sand squishing between your toes? Become more aware of your immediate surroundings and name 3 things that you can physically feel.

Step 5: Name 2 things you smell

What does this environment smell like? Is it familiar, and how so? What does it remind you of? Simply acknowledge what you can smell.

Step 6: Name 1 thing you taste

Can you taste the salty air on a beach? Or the water you’re drinking? What can you envision yourself tasting in this place?

Take a moment to recenter and live in this place you have created for yourself. This entire exercise can take 30 seconds, and can be done anywhere. If you want to stretch it out for longer, go ahead! Take as much time as you need. You deserve to feel confident and at peace.

What Does It Mean to Find Your Voice?

What does finding your voice mean? It can mean living life according to your values, acting in a way that reflects your truest self, taking a stand for what you believe in, or the process of finding who you are at your core. With so many distractions around us at all times, it can be difficult to discover your voice through all of the noise. Even when you have a clear understanding of your convictions, it’s only human to falter or second guess yourself at times.

I found my voice at an early age. When I was only 10 years old, I had to find the courage to speak up to prevent my father from killing a mouse. The mouse had been eating my father’s possessions and he was very upset. I was just a little girl, but I loved all animals and have always believed they have the right to be here just as much as we do. So, despite the incredible fear I felt, I stood up for myself and told my father “No!”. Everyone was stunned, including my father, but I gathered all the courage in the world that a little girl could and released the mouse. That was the first time I found my voice. But for me, finding my voice was associated with survival. It has taken me a long time to separate the two. Speaking up for yourself doesn’t always have to be a confrontation. It can be done in a loving way. We need to shift the paradigm around “speaking up” and “sharing your truth”.

We all live in separate universes, and our own perceptions of the world shape how we view everything.  So, communication is key. It is the bridge between all humans. We all have different life experiences, and those experiences will give meaning to what is happening in our lives. The meaning we each give to something is slightly different, so often misunderstandings happen. I believe that in order to connect with people and to create harmony in any situation, we need understanding. In order to truly understand each other, we must communicate. 

We also have to think about understanding the different intensities of our voices, or the “volume” so to speak.  Sometimes you can say things passionately and no one will listen. Sometimes you say things in a quiet manner and everyone stands at attention. Finding the courage to speak up is important, but so is fine tuning what you are putting into the universe. It’s helpful to remember that it is not about you, but rather the moment shared between you and the person you are communicating with.

So, my advice is this:  When you think of “finding your voice”, instead of thinking that you have to stand up for yourself, and that it’s life or death, a more peaceful and effective way to communicate is to think of it as bridging the gap between yourself and the other person’s “self”. Think of it as trying to create understanding. You try to understand them, and help them to understand you.

Everything You Need to Know About Manifestation

WHAT IS MANIFESTATION?

Manifestation is the process of writing down, visualizing, and putting your goals into action. It seems like every few years manifestation has a resurgence in popularity, with new gurus touting its benefits and promising their methods will make your dreams come true overnight. Even TikTok has caught on – the 3-6-9 manifestation method hashtag has been viewed 89.3 billion times as of July 2022.

So, is manifestation a practice really worth trying, or too good to be true? While not backed by science, it seems there is no big harm in giving it a whirl, and it can actually help you put your goals into action. That is, if you do it the right way. Some of the most successful people in the world swear by manifestation (Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, Lady Gaga, and more!), but they didn’t just write down a wish and win the lottery the next day.

HOW TO START

Before you run out to buy a manifestation journal, it’s important to get an understanding of what the process is. There are so many different ways to go about it, but there are a few rules that connect all of the methods out there:

  • Ask for exactly what you want, and be specific. Nebulous goals aren’t helpful!  
  • Write it down or create a vision board. Simple visualization during meditation works as well.
  • Take small steps to achieve what you want. If your ultimate goal is to write a novel, start by reading a book on creative writing. Or make a commitment to write creatively at least once a week. Slow and steady wins the race!
  • Know that manifestation isn’t for everyone. What works for one person may not work for you!
  • Don’t fall for quick fixes. Despite popular belief, manifestation is not something that doesn’t involve action. You can’t magically get what you want overnight. As Jim Carrey once said, “you can’t just visualize and then go eat a sandwich”.

In order to start manifesting the life you want, there a few guidelines to stick to. Oprah is one of it’s most well-known cheerleaders, but is also clear that it takes a certain amount of fortitude and willingness to move towards a goal. Here are a few of her many tips on how to use manifestation to your fullest advantage.

You can’t be scared

In a press interview in 2017, Oprah explained that “in order to draw the thing to you that you want to come, you can’t want it so much that you fear that you won’t get it. You have to do it, and then prepare yourself to be there and ready when it shows up”.

Don’t hang on to it too tightly

Another great piece of advice from the queen of manifestation is to let go of what you want to a certain degree after you’ve written them down or visualized them. Oprah said in the same 2017 interview that getting what you dream of is about “letting it go but moving in the direction of it”. Taking small steps toward your goal without obsessing over it is key.

Manifesting is about putting your truest self out into the world

In one of her Super Soul Conversations, Oprah explained that she views manifestation as a way to live your fullest, truest life. According to her, “unless you are finding a way for what you believe to be true about yourself to express and manifest itself into the world, you are not living your fullest life”. If you view manifestation as the act of you trying to live to your fullest potential, it becomes an easier concept to grasp.

What we think, we become…. Our lives are our own creation. I know that’s hard to believe when life is giving you lemons. But, it’s true. Our mind, our perception, and our thoughts shape what we experience. So, if we realized that we are always manifesting with every thought, we can focus on the things we want to experience and let go of the things that do not serve us. But we can’t trick ourselves. We have to believe it.

And one little reminder: we are given the power to manifest anything we want.  So be careful. Sometimes we can manifest things before we are ready for them.  Wanting money without knowing how to save, invest, or take care of that money doesn’t get you where you want to go.  Wanting good health without being ready to make the changes you need to live a life that nourishes your mind, body, and soul won’t work either. Manifesting isn’t just wanting. It’s about aligning with your true destiny and self. When that alignment happens, things will just flow.  It’s simple, but in our complicated worlds, finding the simplicity can be a challenge.  Calm the mind, listen to your soul, and then manifest.

Your surroundings matter, and having things around you that make you happy, ground you, inspire you, or relax you is more important than you may think. It’s a form of self care that lasts longer than a relaxing bath (although that is nice too)!

I just bought these cute little vases and they add a elegance and they soften a room. You can just take a rose from your garden or some twigs and you have instant still art. The color is a stone white so while it’s white, it also feels earthy which is helpful when we live these lives where we have no time to enjoy nature. Bring nature in.

This beautiful mango wood black bowl is also something I purchased recently to add some contrast. It adds instant, zen elegance.

I know what you’re thinking: turning my room into a “sanctuary” sounds costly. Decorations? In this economy? I don’t think so. However, turning your space into a calm, inviting getaway can be done with a few inexpensive tweaks. If you’ve found yourself looking at a room in your house or apartment and thinking “this doesn’t feel like me”, this article is for you. Sometimes we don’t even notice we’ve been living in a house that doesn’t feel like a home until we make the effort to put our personal tastes into it. Read on for tips on how to turn any space into your personal sanctuary!

Tip #1: Lighting

The first step in creating a cozy, sanctuary-like atmosphere is to get the lighting perfect. Lighting can change the look and feel of a room and exude touches of your personality. Humans are sensory beings, and the wrong lighting can turn a nice space into a cold, uninviting, and sometimes stressful atmosphere. The best way to find out if a certain diet will work for you is to consult your doctor or a nutritionist, but there are a few ways to vet options before you get that far.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is

If a new supplement or weight loss program is making wild claims about the efficacy of their product, be weary. Especially if these claims promote dropping weight quickly. According to the Mayo Clinic, 1-2 pounds a week is the most you should aim for when losing weight.

“__ free” diets are not as helpful as you’d think

Fat free, gluten free, carb free, or any of those “free” diets are not all that they’re cracked up to be. Unless you have a specific condition or were told by your doctor to restrict something, this kind of philosophy may be detrimental to your health journey. Fat free diets in particular have become widely accepted as a “healthy” way to lose weight. Healthline states that while “this diet may benefit certain individuals with serious health conditions, it’s likely unnecessary for most people”. This is because there are many kinds of healthy fats that are a “major source of calories, build cell membranes and hormones, and help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K”.

Myth #2: Antiperspirants cause breast cancer

If you’ve tossed your favorite antiperspirant due to swirling internet rumors that it causes breast cancer, the American Cancer Society wants to ease your fears. They have stated that “there are no strong epidemiologic studies in the medical literature that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, and very little scientific evidence to support this claim”. If you’re worried specifically about aluminum, the active ingredient in many antiperspirants, there is little reason to worry. According to the same statement from the American Cancer Society, “it also doesn’t seem that breast cancer tissue contains more aluminum than normal breast tissue. A study that looked at women with breast cancer found no real difference in the concentration of aluminum between the cancer and the surrounding normal tissue”. In conclusion, you can get rid of that natural deodorant if it’s not working for you.

Myth #3: Collagen in skin care = the fountain of youth

Collagen is a key protein produced by the body to give elasticity to the skin. It’s no wonder that it has become one of the most hyped supplements and skin care additives. Who wouldn’t want a miracle collagen-boosting serum? Unfortunately though, science has not caught up with our love of this anti-aging ingredient. The general consensus in the dermatological community is that collagen, when used topically, doesn’t do much outside of moisturize your skin. It’s not going to fill in fine lines, improve elasticity, or have the same effect at Botox. However, there has been evidence that collagen supplements can slightly improve your overall skin.

Myth #4: Alkaline water is healthier

Alkaline waters, or brands promoting that their specific product has a high pH level, won’t do anything to actually change the pH of your blood. Yes, they may be less acidic, but that’s about it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “unless you have certain conditions such as kidney or respiratory disease, your body maintains a healthy pH balance on its own”. If buying alkaline waters has been costing you an arm and a leg, rest assured you can return to regular water and get the same level of hydration.

Myth #5: Egg yolks are bad for you

There’s no evidence to suggest that eating an egg yolk as opposed to egg whites is going to significantly increase your cholesterol. In fact, Harvard Health recently analyzed two studies that found that eating eggs may actually lower your risk of heart disease. According to the studies, “those who ate an average of one egg per day had a 28% lower risk of death from stroke and an 18% lower risk of death from heart disease. The researchers suggested that one explanation might be the fact that eggs contain heart-healthy nutrients, such as folate and omega-3 fatty acids”. In other words, Harvard authorities say that next time you’re craving an omelet you should go for it.

Hopefully hearing the truth about these myths will help you create a wellness plan that truly works for you! A healthy amount of skepticism when it comes to new claims is probably the way to go. Ultimately though, wellness is about what makes you feel good. Approaching trends and marketing campaigns with appropriate information is key, but there’s no need to throw out your Essentia bottles if sipping fancy water makes you feel amazing!

Who said you need to leave your home for the resort experience? Prep for you staycation by making little changes that will make your space feel brand new. Here’s a list of suggestions to get you started:

  • Pack your fridge and pantry ahead of time with your favorite summer foods. If you love to cook, make a meal plan with your favorite dishes. If cocktails are your thing, make sure you have all the ingredients whip up your favorite drink. Stock up on fun snacks that you wouldn’t normally buy and give yourself the permission to eat whatever the heck you want!
  • Make a movie night basket. If hitting the movies doesn’t interest you or is out of your budget (some movie tickets in LA are up to $25), give yourself the full theater experience at home! Gather popcorn, snacks, your favorite candy, etc. and have the basket waiting by the TV for when the mood strikes!
  • Create a spa day. This could be as simple as having a new face mask waiting for you at the end of each day! Or using shower steamers that fill up your bathroom with spa-like scents every morning. There are endless possibilities!
  • Make sure you have fresh sheets and a nice pillow spray. There’s nothing better than snuggling into clean sheets, and it you want to add another level of luxury use a pillow spray!
  • Be a little bougie and leave yourself and your partner pillow mints.
